A special screen which you can “touch” the content inside it

Project Abstract

This is a special “touchable” screen. Instead of interact with the screen, audiences can actually interact with the content inside the screen. For the first step, audiences will play with a cat that live inside the screen.

Videos or images shared online are usually one way communication. They bring information to audiences while not responding to the feedbacks. This project provide a symmetric communication and break the boundary between the physical and digital world.

This project would mainly contains two sections. One is the screen (digital) side and the other one is the hand (physical) side. The screen is playing an image/video of a cat. There will be an area or a box where within the camera range to put the hand. The program will recognize the hand gesture and the cat would respond to the result. I’m also thinking of add a touch input at the physical side to enhance the sense of “reality” and make the experience more immersive. The physical input could be a piece of fur moved by servo and listen to the program.

Inspiration

I was inspired by this meme, which I always want to do when I see cute cats online.

“Nice cat, pat pat”

“Nice cat, pat pat”

Another inspiration is the project MetaTouch - Tactile cabinet of curiosities which combines the visual and tactile input. Participants would “feel” the objects present in visual space by interacting with the installation in the real world.
